5 Easy Ways to Refresh your home after Christmas

1. Decutter and organize

Start with a clean slate. What a wonderful way to kick off the new year with a clean home.

With all the Christmas decorations comes the dust and the mess from packing it away. It’s the perfect time to do a good cleaning of the floors, baseboards, fireplace mantel and those kitchen counters.

I tend to remove everything off my counters to give it a good wipe down. Then items are added back into the space.

How To Wallpaper A Backsplash Before

One of the first thing that I do after the holidays is eliminate the clutter. By eliminating clutter with all the extra “stuff” is a great way for things to feel refreshed.

It’s a chance to recycle some of your home décor items. Put out some of those beautiful new Christmas gifts.

Keep in mind that you are trying to declutter. Remember that less is more too.

2. Select a winter color pallet

Now that the Christmas decorations are packed away. You can bring in cozy peaceful hues of neutrals or add a pop of color. The best way to do this is changing out your pillows, throw blankets as well as artwork.

For a winter color pallet try picking two or three colors. Here are some suggestions for a winter color pallet:

– All Creams for winter whites

– Creams and greens

– Warm earth tones

– Blues, creams and gray

– Go for pops of colors with neutrals

Did you know that you can change the vibe of a room by changing out just a few pillows? It can have the biggest impact in a room for the seasons. It’s a way to bring in color or go for a neutral pallet.

I love mixing neutrals for that winter white effect by using various textures in your pillows. Cream color pillows are perfect for all year long. They are especially pretty for the winter. Add pillows of all the same color but with different textures.

Remember that your pillows on the sofa does not need to match. Also, your pillows should be cozy that makes you want to snuggle up to the sofa for a nice Sunday nap! Nothing worse than itchy or flat pillows that can’t be fluffed.

3. add A Cozy faux fur Throw

There are two ways to add a cozy look to your winter décor. Add a beautiful faux fur throw to your sofa. This year, I purchase a couple for gifts and for myself. They are soft, warm and wash up well. You can see a certain fur baby loves to nap on it. Honestly, it is a perfect addition for the sofa in the winter for snuggling up with the fireplace going or watching a good movie.

Have you seen the small faux furs? You may have seen mine used at Christmas and it is being used for winter too. I have it on my wood coffee table. It brings such a warmth into the room.

These smaller furs are beautiful draped over a the back of a sofa, chair, bed, or bench. I have seen them used on top of a sideboard and table too.

4. candles, candles & candles

Candle light is beautiful any time of the year especially during the dark winter months. There is sometime beautiful yet magical with lighting candles.

A large candle with multi wicks are lovely in a room. It can be placed on a buffet or kitchen island. I tend to use them on higher spaces and out of reach of little hands.

Beautiful lighting is used with an artichoke tealight and a multi-wick candle on a vintage buffet.

Try adding a few white or gold votive candle holders. The light within the white or gold gives sparkle and warmth. It’s warm soft glow pairs wonderful with a beautiful fire in the fireplace. I love to sprinkle them through out the house.

Don’t forget to add a lovely scented candle for the winter. Candles infused with natural essential oils of citrus, cinnamon, vanilla, juniper berry, vetiver, clove, spruce and pine smell wonderful and creates a cozy smelling home during winter. The scent can be very uplifting as well.

5. add greenery

There is no reason for the greenery to completely disappear after the Christmas season is over. We loved how the green from our wreaths and garland made the house look alive. You can still have that look by adding faux or real plants to your space.

Adding real or faux plants in your home adds color and warmth. These days, faux plants are made so realistic that you have to sometimes to touch it to see if it’s real. You can easily change them out throughout the season for a fresh new look.

One of my favorite indoor plants are Devil’s Ivy Pothos. This plant loves indirect light. Pothos are super easy to grow. Just remember to water them every week and watch it grow!

  1. I love all of your ideas! I’m very interested in the small white stand with distressed legs that’s holding your Pothos plant. Any source or tutorial?

    Thanks for the inspiration! Sandra

    1. Kim, I agree with you about the greenery. When people pack up Christmas, they sometimes forget that you can leave out some pines in urns and vases. Add a plant or two to bring back that little bit of color that makes everything cheery and cozy. It’s my favorite too and never goes out of style. Happy New Year!
