A Soft Coral Makeover: Refreshing a Vintage Frame with Dixie Belle Cottage Door

Step-by-Step Tutorial: How to Paint an Ornate Frame

Project Supplies List

• Pristine Cleaner (Essential for surface prep)
• Cottage Door Chalk Mineral Paint
• Clear Coat in Satin
• Gold Gilding Wax
• Dixie Belle 2-inch Mini Angle Brush
• Artist Paint Brush (Optional)
• Frog Tape

1. Prep and Clean

Before painting, always clean your surface to remove dust and grime. I used Pristine Clean because this frame had been sitting in my craft room gathering dust. If you have a piece that’s been in a barn or garage for years, I recommend using White Lightning for a deeper de-greasing.

2. Tape Off the Edges

To keep the chalkboard center clean, use Frog Tape around the inner edges of the frame. This ensures crisp lines and prevents you from scraping paint off the glass or chalkboard later.

3. Apply Cottage Door Chalk Mineral Paint

Now for the fun part! When you first apply Cottage Door, it may look a bit orange, but don’t worry, it will dry to a beautiful, soft coral.

• Apply two coats for full coverage.
• Allow the paint to dry completely between coats.
• Note: No sanding is required with this paint, though you can lightly distress the edges after the second coat if you want a more “shabby chic” look.

4. Add the Finishing Touch with Gold Gilding Wax

To give the ornate details a “regal” look, I used Gold Gilding Wax.

• Pro Tip: Use your fingertip to lightly dab the wax onto the raised portions of the frame. It gives you the most control! If you prefer, an artist’s brush works too.
• Clean up: If you use your finger, simply wash up with Dixie Belle Scrubby Soap. It’s all-natural, smells like citrus, and even has a scrubber built right into the bar!

6. Seal for Protection

To protect your hard work, apply one to two coats of Satin Clear Coat. This gives it a soft glow without being too shiny. Dixie Belle also offers Matte and Gloss finishes, depending on your style. Allow two hours of dry time between coats.

The Finished Result

How fun is this color? Cottage Door is the perfect addition to my craft room. This chalkboard is now ready for hand-lettered quotes or magnetic containers to hold my buttons and beads.
