  • Pressed Flowers
  • Dried mushrooms (optional)

  • Silicone finger thimbles (optional)

Crafting the Large Birdhouse

1. Painting

It will take two to three coats of craft acrylic paint added to the unfinished birdhouse. The paint absorbs and dries very quickly. By the time you paint the entire birdhouse, you should be able to add the second coat.

2. Staining the Roof

Using a stain on the roof is completely optional. I had stain on hand and decided to use it. A more cost-effective option would be to paint it in a coordinating color. You could also water down brown acrylic paint to make a wash over the roof. A third option would be to paint it in a dark color three shades from the base.

3. Adding Embellishments for Crafting Charming Birdhouses

To the front of the birdhouse, I will be adding a 3″ wreath with moss and dried flowers. You can see the here is the tutorial Creating Natural Mini Wreaths: Dried Flowers & Moss for Spring Tables. Add some hot glue around the outside of the wreath and press it around the opening of the birdhouse.

For added texture, incorporate green and Spanish moss along the birdhouse roof and base. A dried mushroom, sourced from floral arrangements, provides an ideal, earthy detail at the base.

The Whimsical Six

1. Painting

Coordinating green, blue, pink, and white paint will unite the small birdhouses, while unique decorations will set each apart. It will take two-three coats of paint. While one birdhouse is drying, you can paint another.

2. Creating Miniature Wreaths

I wanted a couple of the birdhouses to have wreaths on the front of them. To create the tiny wreaths, dollhouse Christmas wreaths were used. The red bow was removed.

Hot glue was added around the wreath and pressed into the moss. More hot glue was placed around the side of the wreath. Again, the side with the glue was pressed into the moss. Continue until the front and sides are covered with moss.

Add a dap of glue to the moss wreath and add some dried flowers. I think the miniature wreaths turned out adorable.

Before embellishing the houses, you can tuck some Spanish moss (optional) inside the birdhouse. It will give it the appearance that birds have been nesting in them.

3. Embellishing Whimsical Birdhouses

Add hot glue around the opening in the small birdhouse. Push a miniature wreath and hold in place for a minute. Allow another minute for the glue to complete dry and cool. Then you can proceed to finish with adding more natural accents.

You can get a lot of rustic charm out of a 3″ grapevine wreath! Just cut off what you need to wrap around a birdhouse or two. The grapevine offers versatile rustic detailing, perfect for wrapping around birdhouses to enhance both texture and visual appeal.

4. Embellishing With Pressed Flowers

Apply a generous coat of Mod Podge to the birdhouse front. Using tweezers, carefully position pressed flowers or leaves onto the wet Mod Podge. Gently brush a light coat of Mod Podge over them, being mindful of their fragility. Allow to dry completely before adding moss or other accents.
