Why decorate the porch for fall?
Not only does it boost your curb appeal, but it also creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere for guests. The porch serves as an extension of your inside space.
I could list lots of tips. However, there are two main focuses for me: 1) make it warm and inviting; and 2) make it cozy.

The color palette for fall is your typical fall colors. My porch blends into the surround of nature. Why go with the traditional autumn colors for my porch? The colors are reminisced of the trees beginning the turn and the beautiful colors of autumn. The green, yellow, orange, and brown tones of the leaves are beautiful. It’s the time of the year for acorns, pods, and pinecones to be forged from trees.
As children, my parents would take us for drives to the Shenandoah Mountains along Skyline Drive. My mother would pack a picnic lunch for us. Such wonderful childhood memories.

make it Warm & inviting
The change of season means time to change out the door mat to welcome guests to your home. You can layer rugs for extra texture.

Add a seasonal wreath to your door. Switch planters to seasonal plants like ornate cabbage and flowers like mums.
I did a combination of real mums on the porch and faux in the planters. It was in the 90s here in Maryland. My Coleus plant works perfectly for fall. The colors blend with the fall decorations. A perfect plant for summer and fall.

In the black tall planters, I placed a grapevine, a bunch of autumn fern and a few branches with acorns, pinecones, and leaves. It makes a beautiful and unique arrangement for the porch.
What to put on the porch?
You can use Mums, pumpkins, gourds, various real or faux plants, ornate cabbage, Indian corn, grapevine wreaths, dried corn husk, hay, etc. Try using lots of different textures from galvanized planters or vintage buckets, hay bales, wood crates, wood step stools, milk can, crock for some vintage and rustic charm.

You can add a leaning fall sign against the house. Sometimes they are made to flip to Halloween or Christmas on the back. Do not be afraid of using some of your vintage items. Here a wire basket is flipped over to place the lantern on. This reproduction clock was on the basement shelf. A few baskets behind it and some textured pumpkins for a pop of color.

A chippy white table displays a variety of items for the fall. Use the space under the table for baskets, crates, and plants. Adding pumpkins or gourds in a basket looks great under a table or bench.
make it cozy
Select a color palette that you enjoy. Does your porch make you want to sit on the steps or the rocker on just to enjoy?
Adding a throw blanket to a chair or rocker. Pillows for the seasons or use texture pillows that are wonderful for any season.

The bench is covered with a throw. It is nicely tucked under to bring some green into the fall decor. I love this rough edge pumpkin pillow found at HomeGoods.

Try adding an arrangement of real fall flowers into a vase on a side table. If you are expecting guests, a floral arrangement on the porch is lovely. Always look in your yard for free items. Late blooming flowers, branches with leaves or berries make a nice arrangement.
Have Fun with it

Well, this leopard print ribbon adds a touch of whimsy. It was incorporated in my fall decorations by making a bow for the wreath, a lantern, and this sweet French Bull Dog Statute. Mr. French wears a bow to match my seasonal decorations.

October should bring us cooler temperatures. Pumpkins of all shapes and sizes will adorn this porch.
