Supplies

For this project, you will need the following supplies:

  • 6-10 large pinecones (2″-4″)
  • Gold Gilding Wax or Antique Gold Rub ‘N Buff (you could use a gold metallic paint)
  • A paper plate or piece of cardboard
  • Artist’s paintbrush
  • Old small flat paintbrush

1. Clean Your Pinecones

You can take a small old flat paintbrush and give each pinecone a good brushing between the layers. The paintbrush will help remove any dirt or debris that could be trapped between the pinecones. Brush over a cardboard box, utility bucket, sink, or outside table.

2. Brush On Gilding Wax

To protect your work, place the pinecone on a paper plate or piece of cardboard. With an artist’s paintbrush, begin to paint the gilding wax onto the pinecone. If you use Antique Gold Rub ‘N Buff, squeeze a small amount onto the paper plate. Dip your paintbrush into the Rub ‘N Buff and apply to the pinecone.

You can choose how much to embellish your pinecones. I experimented with solid gold leaf on some, while others received a touch of gold gilding wax around the edges. This technique reminded me of the captivating interplay between the rich wood tones and antique gold accents found on beautiful pieces of furniture.

Allow the pinecones to cure overnight before using them in any displays. It’s that simple!

Now that you have made some stunning gilded pinecones let’s look at some creative ways to use them.

  • Fill Decorative Bowls: Arrange a cluster of gilded pinecones in shallow, decorative, or dough bowls.
