Do you have a front porch? Is it welcoming and beautiful? Here are some tips on how to make your front porch more appealing for spring.
How do I make my porch look welcoming? It is a common question that I hear often. Many times, their front porch lacks curb appeal. Why?
The door needs a fresh coat of paint. The porch needs good cleaning. Too much furniture or oversized furniture on the porch. A tattered old door mat. No containers of flowers by the door.
I get that plants in containers are not for everyone. However, there are simple changes that can make your porch look welcoming and appealing.
But first…
Thank you to my talented and sweet friend, Wendy at WM Design House for putting a group of wonderful bloggers who are going to share their spring porch ideas.
If you came over from my good friend, Stacy at Bricks ‘N Blooms, welcome! She has a beautiful and charming porch to share with you. Do not forget to check out the rest of the porch tours at the end of my post.
Is this your first time here? If so, let me introduce myself to you. Hi! I am Tammy. Welcome to my blog and home called White Lilac Farmhouse. I live in the southern part of Maryland minutes from the water with my husband of 33 years and two of the cutest French Bulldogs (Piper and Chibi).

how do I make my front porch more appealing?
How can I make my porch beautiful? You can make your porch beautiful on any budget.
Money tight? No problem, shop yard sales or thrift stores for items. A significant impact that you can do is with paint. We are going to talk about that in this post too.

clean it
How to decorate your porch for spring? A start is giving the porch a good cleaning. I am amazed at how much dirt and dust covers my porch right after the winter months. A bucket of warm water with some dish soap and cleaning cloth are all you need.
You should wipe away any cobwebs and dirt from light fixtures, doors, windowsills, etc. My rockers, bench, table, and lantern got a good cleaning too.
Later in the spring after the pollen has settled down, we will give the house a good power washing.
Do you have a leaf blower? It works great on the porch too. Forget about the broom, I love using my husband’s cordless leaf blower for cleaning the dirt and leaves that may settle in the corners.
dress up that front door
If a brand-new door is not in the budget, it is amazing what some paint will do. You can give the entrance a fresh new look by painting your door. The trim around the door can be painted in a white exterior paint to make that door pop. Browse Pinterest for some ideas. Also check out the colors on doors with similar colors to your home. I love driving around, looking at homes and snapping a few photos.
Another way to dress up a door is adding some new hardware. Upgrading your door hardware is a quick and affordable way to express your personal style. A simple swap of the old outdated, worn-out finish to a style that enhances your home. It will add curb appeal too.
Decorate your door
How to decorate your front door for spring? A beautiful wreath with a coordinating ribbon looks wonderful on the front door. It instantly adds a warm and welcoming aesthetic to the entrance of your home.

What can I hang on my front door besides a wreath?
There are several items that you can hang on your front door besides a wreath. Not a fan of wreathes. Try adding an elegant brass door knocker to your front door.
A hanging basket with real or faux flowers can add a layer of texture and color to your door.

Last year, I made this pretty basket with purple and yellow Ranunculus and lavender sprigs. The arrangement was finished off with a bow, bird nest and faux eggs. You can see my tutorial here.
Designer Tip for what to hang on the door:
- Wreath
- welcoming sign
- Swag
- Live succulents display
- Door knockers
- Frame with decorative element
- House numbers
- Seasonal Decorations
- Nothing at all – let beautiful hardware or door be the showstopper.
add rugs
You want a door mat not only to catch the dirt and debris from shoes but also one that is warm and inviting. I love rugs with texture for the porch to serve both purposes. When selecting a rug for the porch, you should make sure it is durable.

Layer rugs on your front porch is like adding a good area rug to a room to ground the space. Try adding a 3 x 5 rug in a contrasting color and pattern. Add your 2 x 3 mat on top.

It instantly can add a pop of color and some personality to your space. You can change it up for the seasons.
adding plants

The best way to make your front porch more appealing is adding plants. Select a complementary color palette to go with your home.
Flank the entrance with two containers filled with beautiful spring flowers.

When you add plants to containers, think of it this easy rhythm “fillers, spillers, and thrillers.” What does this all mean? To make sure you have beautiful focal points in your garden containers include fillers, spillers, and thrillers plants. These three key elements will balance your planter for that WOW factor. You can read more about it in my post Twelve Decorating Tips For Making Your Front Porch Cozy and Beautiful.

If your porch is large like mine, you can create various areas with plants. Here I have this gorgeous Hydrangea in a concrete basket. The Hydrangea will be planted later in my backyard. For the summer, I will add a green fern in this container.

Smaller containers of sedum, Wooly Thyme and Johnny Jump Ups add color, texture, and visual interest to the porch. These plants can withstand some chilly nights.
Why add plants to the front porch? The plants and the containers can express your personality and complement the style of your home-be it formal, cottage, farmhouse, modern, etc. It is an extension of your inside merged with the outdoors.
add seasonal decorations
Add some fun seasonal decorations to your porch. You can even dress your statues with some pretty spring ribbon. Rabbits are perfect addition to the porch for spring and summer.

A beautiful wire cloche brings in that farmhouse or cottage charm. A lantern gives a beautiful soft glow of light in the evenings.

A small table is decorated for spring with plants and other elements. You can use the space underneath a table too.
Cozy front porch
What makes a porch cozy? A cozy front porch needs a comfortable place to sit. Try adding rockers or a bench. If space allows, a porch swing is a perfect addition to any porch.

You can add a washable throw and pillows to your porch. Try adding flowers with a sweet scent. The wind blows and you have amazing aroma therapy right on your porch.

Fragrance blooming spring plants for containers:
- Hyacinths
- Daffodils
- Tulips
- Candy Tuff (one of my favorites)
- Jasmine (the fragrance is stronger at night)
- Rosemary
- Mint
Design Tip:
- Do not overcrowd your porch with too much furniture.
- Make sure your furniture is the right size (scale), and not too bulky.
