Plaid, Skates, and Sprigs: My Cozy Christmas Porch Reveal

Welcome to the front porch! If there is one thing I love about the holidays, it’s that moment when the decorations are finally up. The front porch or exterior of your home is an extension of the inside. You want to make it warm and inviting the minute guests step up to your front door.

Every year, I look forward to decorating the front porch, but this Christmas, I decided to skip the expensive ribbon and pre-made greens at the local nursery. My mission was to use only what I could forage from our yard or already had tucked away in our holiday collection.

The result? A porch that smells incredible and feels truly cozy. It is all about celebrating the simple beauty of pine, spruce, juniper, holly, boxwood, and sticks transformed into lush, handmade swags and planter fillers. Today, I will walk you through how I crafted these gorgeous, free additions and how I tied the whole look together with a few nostalgic touches, like a pair of weathered ice skates, and a cozy red-and-green plaid scarf in place of a traditional bow.

Foraging The Yard

Look Local! Instead of purchasing expensive wreaths, swags, garlands, and fillers for the planters, I grabbed my clippers and sourced all the fillers from our yard or my parents’ yard. Why spend money when you can get it for free? Right?

The Planter Fillers (Your DIY Greens)

My gorgeous, oversized pot arrangements are a custom blend of fresh spruce, pine, and cypress, with bright bursts of holly and red berries, and a nameless bush from my yard that produces small, mauve color flowers. This blend of textures gives the porch a rich, natural depth you can’t buy.

This same foraged arrangement serves as the foundation for my vintage moment: an old vintage sled tucked into the pot with some faux green from my storage bin, given a festive pop of color with a simple pair of red mittens, and a pair of white ice skates dressed up with silver shoelaces.

Look how amazing this planter turned out! The sled in the corner is sturdy and will not topple over. The white ice skates with silver laces and red mittens add the perfect touch to this vignette on the porch.

Creating Your Own Swags

Sometimes the most minor details make the most significant difference. I created a simple swag of real greens to dress up the porch light and lantern, tying the whole entrance together.

Cozy Vignettes: Adding Personal Touches

Nothing says ‘cozy’ quite like texture and a little bit of red plaid (for that Ralph Lauren Christmas inspiration) for the holiday season! The easiest way to add warmth was to shop my own closet and bins. I pulled out a favorite plaid scarf to dress up a faux light-up wreath I’ve owned for years—instant custom decor! This plaid motif carries over to our rocking chairs, where last year’s plaid pillow covers are back in action, making the perfect spot to sit with a warm cup of coffee and admire the view.

A cozy throw is draped over one of the rockers to add a little warmth on a chilly day. I love sitting in the morning, listening to and watching the birds that stay for the winter.

On the side table, I let nature shine with a rustic wooden bowl filled with fragrant dried favorites: running cedar, a couple of cinnamon sticks, vibrant dried orange slices, and classic pinecones. It’s a simple, low-effort centerpiece that brings a beautiful, natural scent to the entire porch.

The Finishing Touches

A plaid scarf adorns this faux wreath with pinecones and red berries. The scarf adds a pop of color with a warm and cozy touch.

And finally, we have the little touch that truly makes it White Lilac Farmhouse—a tradition I couldn’t skip! Our French Bulldog porch statue required its own holiday flair. I used a piece of plaid ribbon and tied a festive bow around his neck. It’s a silly, personal touch, but it definitely seals the cozy deal and ensures our little mascot is holiday-ready!
