Fall Mums 101
Chrysanthemum, (genus Chrysanthemum) also known as “mums”. They are considered to be flowering plants in the aster family (Asteraceae). Mums are beloved flowers with a rich history and symbolism.
There are several cultural meanings, which vary in different corners of the world. In Asia, the chrysanthemum symbolizes a long and happy life. In other parts of the world, it may symbolize a prosperous life, positive growth, joy, and unwavering optimism.
Choosing The Right Fall Mums

Factors to consider when selecting the right fall mums for you:
- Bloom color
- Size
- Annuals or perennials: annuals bloom for one season. Perennial means they can come back each year. Of course, it is dependent on your zone and climate conditions.
- Plant health and condition: You want to select plants that are healthy, and free from any visible signs of disease.
- Purchase plants with plenty of unopened buds and healthy vibrate green foliage. It will help ensure longer-lasting blooms on the mums.
- Select suitable varieties for your zone.
You can see in the photo that my plant is loaded with buds and has healthy green foliage. Pick mums that are not in full bloom. Your goal should be to have the plant bloom consistently all fall.
Planting of Fall Mums

If you want to plant perennials in your landscape or garden, the ideal time to plant them would be in the spring or early summer. It would allow the mum time to establish strong roots before the winter months arrive. However, many people plant mums in the fall for instant seasonal beauty. It will limit the chance of the mums surviving through the winter. I do recommend purchasing annual mums if you want to add fall color to your patio and porch containers.
Best time for fall planting: If planting in the fall, give them at least 6-8 weeks before the first frost to help them get established.
Depth: Dig a hole slightly larger than the root ball should be leveled with the soil. Mums don’t like to be buried too deep. It will cause the plant to rot and die.
Pick the Perfect Spot: Sunlight Mums thrive in full sun, so choose a location with at least 6 hours of sunlight daily. They can tolerate partial shade but will produce fewer flowers.
Soil preference: Mums prefer well-draining soil that’s rich in organic matter. If your soil tends to retain water, amend it with compost or sand to improve drainage.
Spacing in the garden or landscapes: Plant mums about 18-24 inches apart to allow air circulation and give them room to grow. Always read the recommended spacing on the plant for reference. The spacing could depend on the variety you select.
Caring for Fall Mums

Water regularly: Water deeply and consistently, especially during dry periods. Always water at the root of the plant, if possible. Try to avoid overwatering your mums. You want to ensure the soil does not become soggy.
Fertilizing: You should fertilize at planting and again a few weeks later. I recommend that you use a balanced fertilizer formulated for flowering plants.
Deadheading: Remove spent blooms to encourage continuous flowering.
For your perennial mums, you can give them a light pruning after the first frost. It will help to shape the plant.
Protection Recommendations:
- Protect against frost with row covers or mulch.
- Monitor for pests and diseases and take appropriate action.
- Your mums must get the right amount of sunlight. The plant will need at least a minimum of 6 hours of direct sunlight each day.
By following these tips, you can ensure that your fall mums thrive with a stunning display throughout the season.
