Have you ever gotten a flu shot only to feel worse a few days later? That’s exactly what happened to my husband and me. While he recovered quickly, I was hit hard with horrible headaches, sore throat, earaches, and chills. It wasn’t until late Saturday night that I started to feel better. Crazy huh?

We got to experience the Aurora Borealis here in Maryland. Seeing the northern lights has been an item on my bucket list. Never in my wildest dreams would I believe this experience would be available in my backyard. It was not visible to the naked eye. You had to turn the flash off the camera and look through the lens to see the magic. It was breathtaking and something to remember!

We’ve begun our autumn maintenance routine for our home and garden. The landscaping package included with the house wasn’t my favorite. The three spireas near our sidewalk appear lifeless in winter and have a prickly texture that deters deer.

The liriope plants have become overcrowded and must be separated into smaller clumps. I’ve forgotten the name of the large plant; I’ll look it up in my journal. We should move it to a more suitable location.

Our sandy clay soil needed improvement, so we bought a leaf soil mix to help break it down. We’re planning to remove existing plants and prepare the soil this week.

Tip of The Week – Autumn Home and Garden Maintenance

Home Maintenance

  • Winterize your home: Seal up drafts, check your heating system, and prepare for colder temperatures. Don’t forget about the outdoor faucets with frost-proof covers to prevent freezing.
  • Replace the air filters in your home.
  • Check your fireplace/chimney.
  • Replace the batteries in all of the smoke detectors.
  • Clean your gutters: Remove leaves and debris to prevent clogs and water damage.

Garden & Landscape Maintenance

Plant bulbs for spring blooms: You can get a head start on your spring garden by planting bulbs now. October is the perfect time of the year.

  • Fall is a great time to divide perennials to help them flower well. Dig up the root system, remove dead leaves and stems, and shake off as much soil as possible.
  • It is a good time to control weeds because they absorb nutrients the most during this season. Using weed killer in the fall can help prevent weeds from returning in the spring.
  • Garden cleanup to remove fallen branches, leaves, and dead plant debris. It helps eliminate places for diseases and pests to hide.
  • Trim any shrubs or bushes that require cutting back in the fall season.
  • It is the perfect time of the year to fertilize plants, shrubs, and trees.
