Winter Scene Glass Container DIY
The beauty of this Winter Scene Glass Container DIY is that it isn’t limited to just ornaments. This project is so versatile that you can breathe new life into many different containers that you already have around the house. Here are some of my favorite items:
- Glass Canisters: Perfect for a kitchen counter display.
- Apothecary Jars: Adds height to a mantel or entryway table.
- Fish Bowls: Great for a larger, 360-degree scene on a coffee table.
- Hurricanes: Create an elegant look for a dining room centerpiece.
- Terrainiums: Glass terrainiums make great vessels for a winter scene.
What You’ll Need

- Glass Container: An oversized glass ornament (one side open), apothecary jar, hurricane, or even a large fish bowl (I love the ones that are tilted).
- Epsom Salt (the texture is perfect for a sparkling winter snow look).
- A cardboard 3″ glitter house or church ornament (Putz-style house). I found mine at Target for $5, and it lights up. I also bought some at Crackle Barrell. Check around or get a kit to make your own. Remember, the house or church should be 1/4 of the size of your glass container.
- Miniature bottle-brush trees (option: large container, use varying heights).
- Red ribbon for a pop of classic color and holiday cheer. You can use any color to match your holiday decorations.
- Battery-operated twinkle lights (optional)
Step-by-Step: Creating Your Winter Wonderland
1. Prepare Your Snowy Foundation: Pour a generous amount of Epsom salt into the bottom of your glass container. You want about 1–2 inches of depth to create a soft, snowy drift that will hold your items in place.

2. Place Your Glitter Church: Gently nestle your cardboard glitter church or house into the salt. I like to place mine slightly off-center toward the back to leave room for “landscaping” in the front.

After you add your glitter church, sprinkle some Epsom salt around the base to cover the seam. You can also create some snow drifts along the sides or at the back.
3. Add Your Miniature Forest: Place your bottle brush trees around the house.

Design Tip: Use trees of different heights to create depth and a more realistic forest feel. Press the bases firmly into the salt so they stand straight.
4. Add the Finishing Accents: If you are using the oversized ornament, tie a beautiful red ribbon around the top loop. For jars or canisters, tie the ribbon around the neck or the lid for a final festive touch.

Other options for a focal point:
- Snowman
- Deer
- Owl
- Small Lantern
- Clusters of three or five bottle-brush trees in varying heights and colors (cream, seafoam greens, or soft blues).
- Pair of miniature ice skates.
- A small wooden or white-painted decorative sled leaning against a bottle-brush tree (look for an ornament).
- Mercury glass finials.
Let your imagination help you create the perfect winter scene to enjoy after the holidays!
