Swags are a versatile and elegant way to infuse holiday cheer throughout your home. Hang a lush evergreen swag adorned with pinecones, berries and bow on your front door to create a warm welcome for guests. Swags can also be hung under porch lights or inside on large light sconces.

Use several swags along your banisters in lieu of garland for a touch of greenery. Choosing whether to use fresh or faux greenery for the holidays can be difficult. You should consider the pros and cons. Are you using fresh for the short term or opting for faux for long-term use? Do family members have allergy issues? You will need to decide what works best for your home.

Pros of Fresh Greenery:

  • Natural Beauty: Fresh greenery offers a truly authentic and natural look.
  • Fragrant: Many types of fresh greenery, such as pine and fir, emit delightful holiday scents.
  • Versatility: Fresh greenery can be used in various ways, from wreaths and garlands to centerpieces and table settings.

Cons of Fresh Greenery:

Beautiful green wreath with pinecones.
  • Short Lifespan: Fresh greenery can quickly dry out and lose its vibrant color.
  • Maintenance: Fresh greenery requires regular watering and care to maintain its freshness.
  • Mess: Needles and sap can create a mess, especially when handling and disposing of the greenery.
  • Potential for Allergies: Some people may be allergic to certain types of fresh greenery.

Pros of Faux Greenery:

  • Long-lasting: Faux greenery can last for many years, making it a cost-effective option.
  • Low Maintenance: Unlike fresh greenery, faux greenery requires no watering or special care.
  • Versatile: Faux greenery can be used in various ways, from wreaths and garlands to centerpieces and table settings.
  • Allergy-Friendly: Faux greenery is a great option for people with allergies to pollen or other allergens.

Cons of Faux Greenery:

  • Less Natural Look: While faux greenery has improved significantly in recent years, it may not have the same natural look and feel as fresh greenery.
  • Environmental Impact: The production of faux greenery can have a negative impact on the environment.
  • Potential for Plastic Appearance: Some lower-quality faux greenery can look artificial and plastic.

Consider these pros and cons when deciding whether to use fresh or faux greenery for your holiday décor.

Where To Find Fresh Greenery?

Fresh holiday for Christmas centerpieces and swags.

You can forage for fresh greenery on your property. I can find running cedar, pine, boxwood, spruce, and other items here in Maryland. Most local stores, such as Lowes and Home Depot, will carry fresh wreaths, garlands, swags, trees, etc. Local garden centers and nurseries will carry many of these items, including fresh berries and pinecones, which can be used to decorate wreaths and swags. Try local farmers’ markets too. There are some reputable online stores that will ship fresh wreaths and garlands.

Care and Maintenance Tips For Real Greenery

Here are some tips to keep your fresh Christmas greenery looking its best:

  1. Watering:
    • Keep the base of your Christmas tree moist.
    • For cut greenery, use a flower preservative solution in the water.
    • For potted plants, water them regularly, ensuring the soil is moist but not soggy.
  2. Placement:
    • Avoid placing your greenery near heat sources like vents, radiators, or fireplaces, as this can cause it to dry out quickly.
    • Choose a cool, well-ventilated location to prolong its life.
  3. Misting:
    • Mist your greenery regularly, especially if the air is dry. This helps to maintain moisture and prevent the needles from drying out.

By following these simple tips, you can enjoy the beauty of fresh Christmas greenery for longer.
